When we were first consulted on this project, there was an initial set of plans for the playspace that consisted of poured-in-place rubber safety surfacing, a large storage unit and fencing. The forward-thinking staff knew that they needed a more natural play environment to support their curriculum and truly engage the children.
Surrounded by a 4-storey building and an abundance of paved surfacing, the scale of the space was initially very intimidating. Through careful selection of natural furnishings, plant material and child-scaled environments we were able to "soften" the space and create a more comfortable setting for the children. While this space offers an abundance of play opportunities in a small space, it also softens the aesthetic of the interior as children and educators look into the space. The unique relationship between the natural playground and the indoor educational environment is truly one-of-a-kind.
