How to Tap a Sugar Maple Tree

With the start of spring right around the corner, it is officially maple syrup season! Before you fire up those pancakes, Bienenstock Director of Education Jill Bienenstock, demonstrates how to tap a sugar maple tree.

Step 1.

Using a ½” drill bit, drill a 1.5” to 2” (4-6cm) hole (careful to not go too deep!) into the tree.

Step 2.

Place the spile in the hole.

Step 3.

Hammer the spile into the hole.

Step 4.

Place the bucket on the hook.

Step 5.

Attach the lid.

Happy Maple Syrup Season!
